Sea Pines Bicycle Tour - The Sea Pines Bicycle Tour is on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m.-12:30 pm. The cost of the tour is $14 for adults and $8 for children twelve and under, one complimentary child per paying adult. Listen as she describes Gullah life for West African plantation slaves and their continuing heritage today.

Howell and Mitchelville Tour, The tour traces the African-American experience on the Sea Islands from the mid 19th century through the 20th century. The tour includes visits to Ft. Mitchel Tour, Presented at the site of this earthen work on Skull Creek, the tour starts with an overview of the role Hilton Head Island played during the Civil War and identifies other Civil War sites and activities on the island. You will see a maritime forest, salt marsh, fresh water pond habitat, a variety of birds, alligators, and marsh inhabitants during this two hour, 1 1/2 mile walk. Wednesdays Only, Wednesday January 05, 2005 thru Wednesday, December 28, 2005, 10:00 AM, Hiltons Headlands History Tour, This tour includes the early explorers of the island during the Civil War, Mitchelville and the Steam Cannon. The tour visits the Forts of Port Royal and other historical sites giving an excellent perspective of the Island's headland. Reservations are required for this 2-hour tour.

Wednesday, January 05, 2005 thru Saturday, December 31, 2005, 10:00 AM, Pinckney Island Bicycle Tour, Ride on geared mountain bikes past the maritime forest, salt marsh, fallow fields, and fresh water ponds to the island's end. Learn some history along the way dating from prehistoric inhabitants to Constitution signer Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. This is a two-hour tour; the cost is $25 per person and includes helmets, bikes, and guide. You must be 13 or older. Reservations required at 843-689-6767 ext 223.

 

Thursday, January 06, 2005 thru Thursday, December 29, 2005, 2:00 Pm, Native Americans on the Sea Islands Tour, The Tour traces thousands of years of occupation as evidenced by many sites on Hilton Head Island. The tour addresses periods of Native American occupation on the island, and highlights the Mississippian site of Green's Shell Enclosure. The tour of the site is preceded by a hand on lecture featuring fiber tempered pottery, implements and lifestyles of this important group of early residents. Hilton's charting of the island in the 1660's continuing through the ante-bellum years to 1860. The overview begins with a hand on lecture examining sea island life, heritage crops, native islander, and plantation life. Tuesdays Only, Tuesday, June 07, 2005 thru Tuesday, August 30, 2005, 10:00 AM, Daytime Turtle Talks and Walks, Daytime lecture and beach walk to educate participants about the threatened loggerhead sea turtles. After an introduction, we will proceed to the beach to examine the nesting habitat and nest sites. Turtles are not seen, as they are nocturnal.

 

Tuesdays and Thurdays only, Thursday, June 02, 2005 thru Tuesday, August 30, 2005, 8:00 PM, Evening Turtle Talk and Walk, An evening Lecture and beach walk to educate participants about the threatened loggerhead sea turtle. Lecture is presented to group and then 2 groups of 10 proceed to the beach to examine the nesting habitat and nest sites. Turtle sightings are not guaranteed. Reservations are required.
